From a first sprint triathlon to an Ironman under eleven hours.

I write each plan around your job, your test results and the race on your calendar. Every plan starts with a heart-rate and power test, so your zones come from your own body and not from a chart for your age.

I walked parts of my first half marathon. A year on the Build plan later I ran 1:52, and never trained more than the seven hours a week I had.

I came to triathlon at thirty-one, after a knee injury ended my football.

I learned to swim lengths at the town pool and finished my first Ironman four years later. On race day you should know your pace is right, because you held it in training for months, in the heat and on tired legs.

Before you start

Do I need to have raced before?

No. About a third of the athletes I coach start with no race behind them. We pick a first race eight to sixteen weeks out and build towards it.

How many hours a week will I train?

As many as you have. A sprint triathlon or a 10k needs four to six hours a week; an Ironman build peaks at twelve to fourteen. You tell me your week and I plan inside it.

Can you coach me if I don't live in Bend?

Yes. Most of my athletes train elsewhere. Your plan, your files and our calls are all online; athletes in Bend can add sessions at the track and the pool.

What happens in the first test?

A 20-minute power test on the bike, a 30-minute run at your best even effort and a 400-metre swim. From those I set your heart-rate, power and pace zones.

What equipment do I need?

A heart-rate monitor and a watch that records your sessions. A power meter or a smart trainer helps for cycling, but we can start without one.
