How a chair is made

Our walnut comes from two farms in the Douro valley and is air-dried at the sawmill in Peso da Régua for two years. The felt is woven and fulled from Bordaleira wool at a mill in Serra da Estrela.

We make chairs in batches of twelve. Each one is cut, joined, sanded and oiled by the same person, then upholstered in the next room. That takes nine working days, which is why a chair reaches you about three weeks after you order it.

  1. 01

    Cut

Each part is cut from one board, so the grain runs on from the arm into the leg.

  2. 02

    Join

Mortise and tenon joints, glued and pinned with walnut dowels. Nothing is screwed.

  3. 03

    Oil

Sanded to 240 and given three coats of hard wax oil, a day apart.

  4. 04

    Upholster

Cane webbing is pressed into the seat and back, then the cushions are cut and sewn for that frame.

The showroom is at the front of the workshop. Every chair and both felts are there to try, and you can watch the bench through the glass.
