Wren Book a chair

About the salon

A neighbourhood salon on 45th Street since 2014

Small on purpose

Six chairs and two nail tables is as big as we want to be. It means Claire knows most clients by name, and nobody waits in the chair while a stylist runs between three people.

How it started

Claire cut hair downtown for twelve years before she signed the lease on an old shoe repair shop on 45th Street. The first year it was her, one chair and a borrowed nail table.

The windows stayed, the round mirrors came from a hotel refit, and the plants are mostly cuttings clients brought in. The chairs filled one at a time.

Who does your hair

Ask for anyone by name when you book. Claire, Tasha and Rosa speak Spanish; June speaks Korean.

Training happens on the floor, during real appointments

Training

Learn on a working floor

Two places a year for people new to hair, or coming back to it. Tasha and Rosa both started here this way.

  1. 1

    Watch real appointments

The first month beside a senior stylist: consultations, sectioning, mixing colour and keeping a station clean.

  2. 2

    Practise, then work on models

Mannequin heads on Monday, when the salon is closed, then friends and family as models at half price.

  3. 3

    Take your own clients

Simple cuts and blow-dries on your own, with Claire checking each one before the client leaves.

Cost and hours are agreed with each trainee.
